Police were called to the building on Queens Blvd. near 62nd Ave. in Rego Park just before 12:55 p.m. after residents reported a foul odor.

“It smelled for at least two weeks,” said one resident, who did not provide her name. “It got a little stronger, maybe because it got warmer.”

Police investigate after a body was discovered in the bushes outside an apartment building at 92-40 Queens Boulevard in Queens on Sunday, May 12, 2024.

“I could smell it just passing by, I was thinking it was a dead rat or something like that,” said a resident who only identified himself as Jerry. “I’ve been in this building 27 years and I’ve never seen something like that.”

Six injured in Brooklyn church fire during Easter Mass https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/03/31/five-injured-in-brooklyn-church-fire-during-easter-mass/ Sun, 31 Mar 2024 22:37:17 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7610838 Six people were injured when a fire broke out in a Brooklyn church during an Easter Mass, officials and witnesses said.

Firefighters were called to Our Lady of the Rosary of Pompei Church on Seigel St. near McKibben Court in Bushwick just before 1:50 p.m., police said.

Fire officials on the scene late Sunday afternoon said about 150 people were attending Mass when they smelled smoke and called 911.

“There was a Mass happening at that time,” said the woman, who did not want to be named. “We saw the smoke, and everybody went out.”

As firefighters worked to knock down the flames in the neighboring rectory of the church, witnesses told the Daily News that a priest ran into the church and emerged several minutes later carrying the consecrated host and a chalice wrapped in cloth.

Firefighters working inside were met with such heavy flames and dangerous conditions that a lieutenant fell from the second floor to the first when the floor underneath him gave out, FDNY Assistant Chief Michael Meyers said at a news briefing.

“To show the strength and tenacity and determination of our firefighters, they gave the Mayday for him, [and] he didn’t realize that the Mayday was for him so he bounced up off the floor,” Meyers said. “[He] came in and wanted to run back up the stairs to address the Mayday issue not realizing that the Mayday was himself.”

Six people suffered minor injuries in the blaze, including three firefighters. Four of those injured were treated on the scene, and two were taken to area hospitals.

“I’m happy to report, Easter Sunday … nobody with any life-threatening injuries at this time,” said FDNY First Deputy Commissioner Joseph Pfeifer.

Suspect arrested for murdering 2 men found dead in Brooklyn arson blaze https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/03/25/suspect-arrested-for-murdering-2-men-found-dead-in-brooklyn-arson-blaze/ Mon, 25 Mar 2024 19:51:09 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7598355 A suspect has been arrested for murdering two men whose charred remains were found in a Brooklyn apartment arson blaze, police said Monday.

Alex Alive, 33, is charged with two counts of murder for the March 17 deaths in the four-story building on Bay 29th St. near Bath Ave. in Bath Beach, according to cops.

Firefighters discovered the lifeless men in an apartment where a couch had been set on fire, authorities said.

One of the men suffered a gunshot wound to the head and the other died of smoke inhalation, NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said at a news briefing last week.

Police are still working to identify the victims.

“This location is known as a hangout for Russian males, who go there, hang out and drink,” Kenny said.  “The tenant of record is a male 61 years old. We have not found him yet, so he may be one of our victims.”

“He is a really peaceful guy,” a friend of the leaseholder told the Daily News after the fire. “He’s not violent, He doesn’t fight with anybody.

“He welcomed people into his apartment, but other people abuse him all the time,” the friend said of the tenant. “He never make problems, other people all the time, they make problems in his apartment.”

The man, who asked not to be identified, called his friend the evening of the fire and was told Alive was at the apartment.

“He said [Alive is] sleeping,” the friend recounted. “I said, ‘What are you doing with Alex?’ Because they don’t like each other.”

The friend said he severed ties with Alive after being assaulted by him, adding that Alive is a violent alcoholic and drug user.

“Alex only beat women and men that were smaller than him,” the friend said.

Alive has seven prior arrests for assault and criminal possession of a weapon, according to cops. He lives half a mile from the building that burned, according to cops.

Police do not believe there are any other suspects involved in the slayings.

As Alive was led from the NYPD’s 62nd Precinct stationhouse Monday, the suspected murderer claimed he’s “not guilty.”

“I did not do it!” Alive shouted.

“It’s a miracle that we found him,” Basia Lewandowski told the Daily News. “I hope he makes it.”

Lewandowski was visiting with friend and fellow lifeguard Amanda Reynolds on the sands near Beach 75th St. shortly before 6 p.m. when lifeguards were alerted that the teenage victim was floundering off the coast of southern Queens, Lewandowski said.

Reynolds immediately dove into the sea as Lewandowski sprinted across a jetty in an effort to direct her partner towards the drowning boy, she said.

“Amanda’s in the water and I ran out on the jetty, running point so I could direct her where to go,” she recounted.

The retired lifeguard then joined other rescuers in the water, where they formed a line in order to sweep the coast in hopes of spotting the submerged teen, Lewandowski said.

“We did our protocol, which is a diving line,” the retired lifeguard described. “All the lifeguards line up and we sweep the water.”

Precious minutes ticked by before one the rescuers happened upon the unconscious teen and the swimmers began the arduous task of towing him back to shore, according to Lewandoski.

“He was really heavy, so getting him out was kind of hard,” she said.

The boy was submerged beneath the rising tides — which at the time of the rescue were off limits to swimmers due to risk of lightning — for as long as five minutes, and Lewandowski said he was foaming at the mouth as rescuers tried to resuscitate him.

“We did CPR right away, chest compressions,” Lewandowski said. “He was foaming, it was a lot of water.”

Paramedics rushed the teen to St. John’s hospital in critical condition, according to police.

As the ambulance pulled away, the lifeguards on the beach mused at the incredible odds of them finding the boy at all, Lewandowski said.

“I think we’re all just shocked that we actually found him,” said Lewandowski.

The rescue off Rockaway Beach follows the tragic near-death drowning of Rikeverns “Ricky” Joassaint, who remains on life support after slipping beneath the surface of Prospect Park Lake last month.
