Kimberly Gotti, 55, and her 23-year-old daughter, Gianna Gotti, are accused of pummeling a woman and tearing off her wig during the contest.

The two would have gotten their assault charges dismissed if the daughter pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor on Wednesday, News12 Long Island reported.

Their defense attorney Gerard Marrone previously turned down a plea deal that would have required the pair to take anger management classes, arguing that his clients were not the aggressors in the altercation.

On Feb. 8, the women were attending an evening matchup between the Oyster Bay and Locust Valley high school boys’ basketball teams in Lattingtown, L.I.

A heated exchange in the stands shortly after 8 p.m. allegedly prompted a 47-year-old woman to scold adults who were hurling homophobic and misogynistic slurs at students.

Kimberly Gotti is accused of rushing that woman, punching her and taking the alleged victim’s hat, while Gianna allegedly joined in on the punching, tore at the woman’s hair and later boasted about the beatdown.

The victim reportedly suffered scratches to her face and injuries to her scalp, which she told police felt like it “was going to be ripped off.”

Marrone claimed that the victims in the stands were parents from Locust Valley who were picking on Kimberly’s son Joseph, who plays for Oyster Bay. He added that Kimberly was punched first. John Gotti Jr. also claimed that his wife was punched in the head.

He said the only reason his wife and daughter were appearing in court was because they refused to press charges against anyone else.

The case is scheduled to return to court on June 4.

Barron Trump declines Florida GOP delegate position https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/05/10/barron-trump-declines-gop-delegate-florida-convention/ Sat, 11 May 2024 00:01:47 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7681800 According to his mother, Barron Trump is declining an offer to serve as a GOP delegate when his father Donald Trump officially becomes the Republican party nominee during July’s convention.

He’s busy that day.

“While Barron is honored to have been chosen as a delegate by the Florida Republican Party, he regretfully declines to participate due to prior commitments,” according to a statement from Melania Trump obtained Friday by NPR.

Three of the presumptive presidential candidate’s children were listed as convention delegates by the Florida Republican Party’s list of at-large delegates released Wednesday. His daughter Ivanka Trump had been the sole exception.

Barron Trump has kept a very low profile since his father entered politics as a GOP candidate for president in 2015. That unlikely candidacy ended in an Electoral College victory for the 77-year-old former reality TV star.

But Barron Trump’s own foray into politics may be simply being postponed rather than canceled, according to the former president, who hopes to return to the White House in November.

“He’s pretty young. I will say he’s 17,” Trump Told Telemundo Thursday. “But if they can do that, I’m all for it.”

Barron, who graduates from high school next week, celebrated his 18th birthday in March.

A New York judge granted Donald Trump a day off from his ongoing criminal trial in Manhattan to attend his son’s May 17 graduation ceremony in Florida. The former president is also scheduled to speak at a fundraiser in Minnesota later that day.

Neither Melania nor Barron Trump have attended Donald Trump’s trial, which centers around hush money he allegedly paid to a porn star he had an affair with in 2006 shortly after his son was born.

Trump has denied the fling, despite evidence and testimony arguing otherwise. It’s not known if he’ll take the stand in his own defense.

Wild video shows smash-and-grab thieves trash Connecticut jewelry store https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/05/10/smash-and-grab-robbery-westport-ct-jewelry-store-video/ Fri, 10 May 2024 22:45:39 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7681671 A pair of masked thieves armed with heavy hammers committed a brazen midday smash-and-grab heist at a jewelry store in Connecticut Thursday afternoon.

Police in Westport said on Facebook they’re searching for the culprits, who drove away in a black BMW sedan after bashing in several display cases at Lux Bond & Green.

“Employees of the store reported two individuals wearing masks and gloves entered the store with sledgehammers and began smashing display cases with sledgehammers,” cops said. “The employees safely retreated to the rear of the store and had no interaction with the suspects.”

How much merchandise the thieves stole wasn’t immediately clear. The store did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Virginia school board votes to reinstate Confederate names https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/05/10/virginia-school-board-confederate-names/ Fri, 10 May 2024 20:27:20 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7681380 A Virginia school board voted overwhelmingly to reinstate the names of two schools honoring Confederate leaders.

Mountain View High School and Honey Run Elementary School will again be known as Stonewall Jackson High School and Ashby Lee Elementary School.

The decision was reached by a 5-1 vote Thursday at a Shenandoah County School Board Meeting.

Virginia was home to the capital of the Confederacy during the U.S. Civil War, which lasted from April 1861 to April 1865. The state moved to change school names memorializing secessionists after Minnesota man George Floyd was filmed being killed by Minneapolis police in 2020, sparking nationwide riots.

Board member Brandi Rutz told the Daily News via email that the initial process four years ago to change the school names was rushed, “flawed” and complicated by the COVID-19 lockdown.

“We are not discounting the past, the negative parts of our Virginia history or the experiences of our Black neighbors,” she said. “They need to be heard, acknowledged, welcomed and included.”

For Rutz, “the preservation of the democratic process and overwatch of government” was on the ballot at Thursday night’s meeting.

“I feel that was the subject of last night’s vote,” she said.

Fellow board member Gloria Carlineo, who noted she’s a Hispanic woman born and raised in Puerto Rico, shares Rutz’s sentiments about the previous vote being unfair. She also said for many area residents, the preservation of Virginia’s history is a big factor in the naming of schools.

“It is very sad that we live in a time where not only is history being systematically erased but that people are encouraged to feel victimized as part of their cultural or ethnic heritage,” Carlineo said via email.

Other board members did not immediately return a request for comment.

One Black resident in attendance at Thursday’s session, which lasted more than six hours, felt the renaming was a step in the wrong direction, according to the Washington Post.

“Why are we here tonight to go back to a time in history that was very cruel?” that person asked. “Is this the type of legacy you want to put in Shenandoah County’s public school buildings?”

Ashby Lee Elementary School was named for both cavalry officer Turner Ashby, who died in battle in 1862, and Gen. Robert E. Lee, who led the Confederate forces. Stonewall Jackson served under Lee and led the charge in 1864’s bloody Shenandoah Valley Campaign.

Bodycam video shows fatal shooting of Black airman by Florida deputy https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/05/10/airman-roger-fortson-shot-by-police-bodycam-video/ Fri, 10 May 2024 18:16:06 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7681207 A Florida sheriff’s office released police bodycam footage of an officer killing a Black serviceman in an Okaloosa County apartment, following claims by the victim’s family that the shooting was “unjustifiable.”

The video shows 23-year-old U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Roger Fortson holding a gun pointed at the ground while answering the door of his apartment after a deputy twice knocked and identified himself as a law enforcement officer.

The unidentified Okaloosa County deputy tells Fortson to “step back” then immediately fires at least four shots in succession, sending Fortson to the ground.

“Drop the gun!” the officer orders repeatedly.

Fortson tells the deputy he’s already dropped the weapon and the lawman calls for medical assistance on his radio.

Civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who’s representing the victim’s family, earlier claimed law enforcement responding to a call about a disturbance wound up outside the wrong apartment. Crump also alleged the officer failed to identify himself and obscured the door’s peephole.

Fortson was alone in the apartment and speaking to his girlfriend on FaceTime when the shooting occurred, according to the Fortson family’s lawyer.

“We remain adamant that the police had the wrong apartment as Roger was on the phone with his girlfriend for a substantial amount of time leading up to the shooting, and no one else was in the apartment,” a statement from Crump argued Thursday.

After releasing video of the shooting, Okaloosa County Sheriff Eric Aden said he met with the victim’s family to express his sympathy, according to The Associated Press.

“These investigations take time, but I want to assure you that we are not hiding or attempting to cover anything up,” he said.

Crump said the May 3 shooting took the life of “an exceptional guy” the responding officer misjudged.

They took a patriot from us,” he said.

According to Crump, the serviceman armed himself after he heard someone outside his apartment but received no answer when he asked who was there. The gun he retrieved was legally owned.

Fortson, originally from Atlanta, joined the Air Force on Nov. 19, 2019, according to Military.com. He was reportedly assigned to the 4th Special Operations Squadron at Hurlburt Field, which operates combat aircraft.

Woman beaten, bound, held at knifepoint in Connecticut woods https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/05/09/connecticut-woman-held-knifepoint-willington-woods/ Thu, 09 May 2024 23:05:20 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7679262 Connecticut State Police arrested a man Wednesday morning who allegedly assaulted a woman, bound her with rope and held a knife to her throat when she tried to leave his campsite in Willington.

The victim told police she visited Jonathan Yokabaskas Tuesday night in a wooded area where he lives in a tent. An argument ensued and the 29-year-old suspect physically forced the woman to the ground and threatened to kill her, the accuser claimed.

Things got worse when she made a second attempt to get away.

“Yokabaskas struck her in the face, again forced her to the ground, and bound her wrists with rope, which she later convinced Yokabaskas to remove,” police said Thursday. “The victim further alleged that in the hours that followed, Yokabaskas threatened to kill her and held a knife against her throat several times.”

Around 8 a.m. Wednesday, the victim said she convinced Yokabaskas to let her drive to an area business where she could use the bathroom. Once inside, she phoned a relative who notified authorities.

State police arrived to find Yokabaskas waiting in his alleged victim’s car. Cops also found a 6-inch knife in the vehicle’s passenger compartment.

Authorities said that based on their initial findings, “the incident met the criteria of a family violence crime,” though the suspect’s relationship with his accuser is unclear. He told police he and the victim were involved in a fight.

The victim was taken to an area hospital for observation. Police said they spotted “visible injuries to her face and hands.”

Yokabaskas was taken into custody and charged with assault, kidnapping, threatening, unlawful restrain and possession of a weapon in a motor vehicle.

He was held on $250,000 bond and was scheduled to be arraigned Thursday at Rockville Superior Court.

Michigan woman spent year living rent-free in supermarket https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/05/09/michigan-woman-lives-in-grocery-store-supermarket-sign/ Thu, 09 May 2024 21:16:42 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7678953 A 34-year-old Michigan woman lived in a supermarket for about a year, where her small apartment was furnished with a desk and computer printer, a Keurig coffee machine, a houseplant and a storage space for food.

The unidentified squatter’s rent-free domicile was built behind the sign of a Family Fare store she entered through a small door accessible through the building’s rooftop, according to The Associated Press.

“She essentially made it home,” Midland Police Officer Brennon Warren told MLive.com.

The crafty settler was able to draw electricity from a power cord plugged into a rooftop outlet. Contractors working on the roof reportedly stumbled upon the unauthorized Midland, Mich., apartment in late April after spotting the extension cord.

The sign serving as the alleged vagrant’s front wall overlooks the central Michigan grocery store parking lot. A view from outside gave no indication anyone was living behind that big red-and-white signage, which stands roughly 8 feet tall and 5 feet wide.

The woman, who told authorities she has a job, declined housing assistance. Police told her not to return to the supermarket, where staffers now know her as “The Roof Ninja,” according to MLive.com.

It’s not clear where the evicted woman is from or plans to move to next.

Police said Family Fare wants to make sure its former tenant is reunited with the belongings she kept in her living nook. Officer Warren called the situation “unique.”

Richie Sambora has one condition for rejoining Bon Jovi https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/05/09/richie-sambora-bon-jovi-reunion/ Thu, 09 May 2024 19:04:51 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7678710 Guitar player Richie Sambora is up for a Bon Jovi reunion, so long as frontman Jon Bon Jovi can hold up his end of that potential deal.

Sambora, who abruptly left the New Jersey rock band in 2013 in the middle of an international tour, said on YouTube’s “The Allison Hagendorf Show” that he recently met with Bon Jovi to discuss the vocal cord surgery the singer had in 2022 — and is still working to recover from completely.

“I would definitely go,” Sambora said Wednesday. “If he gets [his voice] back, I’d go play. I’ve got songs.”

Sambora told Hagendorf he envisions doing a duet version of the band’s 2000 hit “It’s My Life,” which he and Bon Jovi wrote together.

“I would without a doubt go back,” the 64-year-old Perth Amboy, N.J. native clarified. “The world needs it.”

Bon Jovi told Ultimate Classic Rock in March that he and Sambora lost touch because his longtime wingman stopped showing up for work — though he clarified “there’s nothing but love” between them. Sambora has since said he was dealing with emotional and substance abuse issues at the time and apologized for how he and the band parted ways.

A four-part docuseries called “Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story” premiered on Hulu and Disney+ on April 26 and seems to have somewhat helped smooth things over between Sambora and Bon Jovi.

Bon Jovi said while promoting the series that he too can see rocking with Sambora again.

“If he wanted to show up and play sometime, he knows the songs,” Bon Jovi said on “Audacy Check-In.”

“Happy 75th birthday to Billy Joel!” announced a social media page operated on behalf of the birthday boy. “What songs are you listening to in celebration?”

Fans joined in, with some of them saying they were looking forward to seeing Joel perform his 148th MSG residency performance Thursday night.

Joel’s X account has been counting down to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee’s 150th and final show at MSG, which takes place July 25.

Fans outside New York City wanting to hear Joel classics like “My Life” and “New York State of Mind” will have a chance to see him perform this summer at Chicago’s Soldier Field, Seattle’s T-Mobile Park and Denver’s Coors Field.

In January, Joel released his first original pop single in 30 years with “Turn the Lights Back On.” His last pop album was 1993’s “River of Dreams.” He put out a new jazz tune in 2007.

Marjorie Taylor Greene’s move to vacate speaker Mike Johnson fails miserably https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/05/08/marjorie-taylor-greene-booed-motion-vacate-speaker-mike-johnson-fails/ Wed, 08 May 2024 22:41:44 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7676772 Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene made good on threats to take a motion to vacate Speaker Mike Johnson to the House floor Wednesday, though the move was killed within minutes.

The far-right wing lawmaker has in recent weeks said she would try to oust her party’s leader, whom she faults for working too closely with Democrats and voting to pass a $1.2 trillion spending bill to prevent a government shutdown in March.

Democrats and Republicans indicated they’d work together again to keep Johnson in his post.

That’s exactly what happened Wednesday when Green’s motion was quickly squashed by an overwhelming bipartisan vote to table her stunt. House Majority Leader Steve Scalise — a Louisianan like Johnson — led that speedy drubbing despite his own party members being caught by surprise, according to CNN.

Greene was loudly booed when she introduced her motion. Once the counting was done, 359 lawmakers backed Johnson, while only 43 sided with Greene.

Johnson became Speaker of the House in October after Republicans led a wild and chaotic initiative to boot speaker Kevin McCarthy from the lower house’s top spot. Getting no help from Democrats, the GOP put Johnson in charge following three weeks of disorder.
