A large fight among about 10 people broke out in front of NYCHA’s South Jamaica Houses on 160th St. near Tuskegee Airman Way in South Jamaica just before 7:45 p.m., cops and witnesses said.

“They were fighting at first,” said an 82-year-old witness. “There were three shots, it stopped and then about two more. People were screaming, ‘They’re shooting! They’re shooting!’”

When the gunfire stopped, a black Hyundai with two men inside took off, police sources said.

Cops were called to the street, where they discovered the young victim suffering from a gunshot wound to the arm.

Medics rushed the girl to Long Island Jewish Medical Center in stable condition.

Later, two women ages 18 and 26 walked into Jamaica Hospital Medical Center for medical help, police said.

The older woman was stabbed in the chest and the younger one had lacerations to the head. Both were expected to survive their injuries.

The mayhem came a day after the oldest victim and her boyfriend were beat up by people who live in a neighboring building, a witness told the Daily News.

“They’re out front all day fighting and shooting craps,” the woman said of the people involved in the fight. “They’re out of control.”

There were no immediate arrests.

Former UConn basketball player Rakim Lubin dead at 28 https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/05/15/rakim-lubin-dead-uconn-basketball/ Thu, 16 May 2024 00:23:06 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7700578 Former college basketball player Rakim Lubin, who played for the UConn Huskies and several other schools, died on Sunday at the age of 28.

His death was announced this week in an obituary posted by the Prestige Memorial Funeral Home, in Gadsden, Ala. A cause of death was not provided.

“He is survived by his loving family. We ask that you please keep this family and those that may be going through the same lifted in prayer,” the announcement read.

Lubin, who played one season as a freshman for the Huskies from 2014-15, later transferred and played at Cal State Northridge for the 2016-17 season. He transferred again to LSU Shreveport, reported CT Insider.

The Alabama native, nicknamed “Rock” for his toughness on the court, was a highly touted three-star recruit coming out of high school.

After moving to Georgia during his adolescence, Lubin led Buford High School to the Georgia 2A state championship his senior year, averaging 20.3 points and 12.1 rebounds per game.

He was named the Georgia Sportswriters 3A Player of the Year, and ultimately committed to play for then-coach Kevin Ollie at UConn in 2013.

During his freshman year, Lubin played in 24 games for the Huskies, but was one of four players suspended from the program that November for violating team rules.

Although he was later reinstated, transferred to Cal State Northridge, where he averaged 18.2 minutes, 8.5 points and 5.2 rebounds per game.

He went on to earn his bachelor’s degree in business administration and management from LSU Shreveport, according to his LinkedIn page.

Following his basketball career, Lubin was arrested in 2019 for allegedly robbing a Jack’s Family Restaurant in Munford, Ala.

Deadly Brooklyn hit-and-run by driver fleeing cops deemed homicide https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/05/15/deadly-brooklyn-hit-and-run-by-driver-fleeing-cops-deemed-homicide/ Thu, 16 May 2024 00:14:22 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7700602 The 71-year-old Brooklyn woman killed by an out-of-control driver fleeing cops last week was the victim of a homicide, police said Wednesday.

Juanita Vidal was running an errand for her 17-year-old grandson’s birthday with her 44-year-old daughter at the same time officers from the NYPD’s 83rd precinct attempted to pull over the driver of a blue Mazda CX-5 with Massachusetts plates at the corner of Eldert St. and Wilson Ave. in Bushwick around 5 p.m. May 9.

The driver instead took off northbound on Eldert St. and blew through two stop signs a block away at the intersection of Knickerbocker Ave. and Eldert St., cops said.

Video viewed by the Daily News showed the driver streaking through the intersection as police followed close behind. Just off camera, in the crosswalk, the driver slammed into Vidal and her 44-year-old daughter.

She was taken to Wyckoff Hospital but could not be saved. Her daughter, Jessica Vidal, was taken to Elmhurst Hospital Center in stable condition.

The city Medical Examiner deemed Vidal’s death a homicide, cops said Wednesday.

Police are still looking for the driver, who ditched the totaled car after the crash and fled onto an L train at the nearby Halsey St. Station.

The driver was described by cop sources as a man with a ponytail wearing gray sweatpants.

Man shot on Harlem street after fight erupts on train: ‘Anybody could’ve gotten hit’ https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/05/15/man-shot-on-harlem-street-after-fight-erupts-on-train-anybody-couldve-gotten-hit/ Wed, 15 May 2024 23:36:52 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7700566 A man was shot and wounded on a Harlem street Wednesday following an argument on a subway train, cops and witnesses said.

The 29-year-old victim and the gunman got into a fight on an A train, which spilled out onto the corner of W. 145th St. and St. Nicholas Ave. upstairs, according to witness Rashard Flowers, who was in the same subway car.

“It was definitely four shots,” the 37-year-old told the Daily News. “He was shot in the arm and leg, his head was bleeding but he was able to get up.”

The victim ran into a Dunkin’ Donuts, where he collapsed.

“I’ve never heard gunshots so close and so loud,” said Flowers. “There are women and children out here — anybody could’ve gotten hit.”

The gunman took off on foot as cops raced to the scene just after 4:35 p.m., police said.

Medics took the victim to Harlem Hospital, where he was expected to survive.

There were no immediate arrests.

Stolen antique weathervane recovered 40 years later at Sotheby’s NY, returned to Vermont https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/05/15/stolen-antique-weathervane-recovered-sothebys-nyc-returned-vermont/ Wed, 15 May 2024 23:25:21 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7700552 BARRE, Vt. (AP) — An antique copper weathervane that was swiped from a Vermont railway station 40 years ago has been found and was returned to the state last week, the Vermont Agency of Transportation announced.

“We are delighted to see this valuable historic artifact and beautiful piece of art returned to its home here in Vermont,” Judith Ehrlich, the agency’s historic preservation officer said in a statement on Monday.

The 1910 weathervane is of a steam locomotive and coal tender and was made by W.A. Snow Iron Works Inc. It sat on top of the White River Junction station in Hartford before it was stolen Nov. 3, 1983, the transportation agency said Tuesday.

Nearly 40 years later, it was consigned to New York auction house Sotheby’s, officials said. The organization Arts Loss Register, which has a database of lost, stolen and looted art, antiques and collectibles, confirmed that the piece was the stolen weathervane, so the auction house pulled it from sale, the transportation agency said.

The state currently owns the White River Junction station. Arts Loss Register worked with the state to return the weathervane last week, the transportation agency said. Sotheby’s paid the $2,300 cost to ship it to Vermont, the state said.

Ehrlich said the transportation agency is working with the state curator to pick a great location for the weathervane “so that it may be enjoyed once more.”

Vandal smashes UES kosher restaurant window; owner believes it was antisemitic https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/05/15/vandal-smashes-ues-kosher-restaurant-window-owner-believes-it-was-antisemitic/ Wed, 15 May 2024 23:23:30 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7700390 A window of an Upper East Side kosher restaurant was smashed in the early hours of Wednesday, an act of vandalism the owner believes to be antisemitic.

Employees at Rothschild TLV on Lexington Ave. near E. 79th St. arrived to work Wednesday morning to discover one of the tall front windows had been shattered overnight.

The manager and owner of the spot reviewed surveillance footage, which caught a man approaching the window at around 2:10 a.m., he said.

“We saw him on the footage,” Mike Kalbo told the Daily News. “His face was covered with a scarf. It was very difficult to see. He came with a tool in his hand to break the glass. We were targeted.”

The NYPD could not immediately provide details and it has not been determined the restaurant was targeted for serving kosher eats, though the department’s Hate Crime Task force has been notified of the incident.

The vandalism echoed a recent incident on the opposite side of town.

In March, Israeli restaurant Effy’s Cafe on W. 96th St. near Columbus Ave. on the Upper West Side was vandalized with pro-Palestinian graffiti.

The metal gate covering the cafe was covered with red paint at night, while “form line here to support genocide” was spray-painted in black on the sidewalk just outside the entrance. Another sidewalk message, painted green, read “Free Gaza.”

Kalbo believes his restaurant, named after a lively boulevard in Tel Aviv, was picked out by a vandal with similar intentions.

“What else could it be?” the restaurateur said. “A crazy person wouldn’t come with his face covered and a tool in his hand. It’s obvious. There is no doubt.”

The incident came on the heels of scores of protests across the city, including several pro-Palestinian encampments at city universities and colleges that ended in hundreds of arrests.

On Wednesday night, a small group of pro-Palestinian students said they were “occupying” the lobby of the CUNY Graduate Center in Midtown, though they left after declaring victory and saying administrators had agreed to forward their demands to the entire student body.

Meanwhile, antisemitism has surged in the city since Hamas attacked Israel on Oct. 7, prompting a ferocious war in Gaza. Antisemitic hate crimes more than doubled that month alone.

As of April 14, there were 96 hate-fueled incidents targeting Jewish people, according to NYPD stats. The figure marked a 45% uptick compared with the same time frame last year, when cops investigated 66 antisemitic hate crimes.

The attacks against Jewish New Yorkers made up 56% of all hate-motivated crimes across the five boroughs, the stats showed.

Wednesday’s incident left Rothschild TLV manager Deana Pekanovic rattled.

“I was shocked,” she said. “It’s really horrible this happened. It’s been a while since the war started, and we’ve never had any issues here. We’ve only had support. We’ve never had any problems.”

Sen. Bob Menendez’s lawyer cites ‘innocent explanations’ for gold and cash stash in bribery trial https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/05/15/sen-bob-menendezs-lawyer-cites-innocent-explanations-for-gold-and-cash-stash-in-bribery-trial/ Wed, 15 May 2024 23:00:18 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7699731 Gold bars and $480,000 cash found in U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez’s house isn’t evidence of bribes — and the alleged quid pro quo the veteran lawmaker is accused of was actually proper and legal constituent services, his defense lawyer said Wednesday during opening arguments at Menendez’s corruption trial.

The gold seized by the FBI actually belong to the powerful New Jersey Democrat’s second wife, Nadine, and he had no idea she had any gold other than her family’s gold, Menendez’s lawyer Avi Weitzman told jurors in Manhattan Federal Court.

And the cash, found stashed throughout the house, was money Menendez withdrew bit by bit over three decades, keeping it in the house because of generational trauma, Weitzman said. His parents were Cuban refugees who lost everything but the cash they hid in a grandfather clock, so he knew the value of keeping money in the house, the lawyer said.

“Of course there’s an elephant in the room, a green and gold elephant,” Weitzman said. “There are innocent explanations for the gold and the cash.”

Menendez, 70, who’s served as a U.S. senator since 2006, is accused of accepting bribes from N.J. businessmen Wael Hana, Fred Daibes and Jose Uribe in exchange for using his influence as the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee to benefit Egypt and Qatar, and to interfere with criminal investigations in New Jersey.

Hana and Daibes are also standing trial, while Uribe has turned government cooperator. Menendez’s wife, Nadine, faces a separate trial in July.

In an opening argument that stretched over an hour, Weitzman used a flashy slide presentation that riffed off the popular “Where’s Waldo” children’s books, with an image titled “Where’s Bob?” to suggest that he had no involvement with any financial dealings between his wife and businessmen like Daibes.

He started dating his wife in 2018 and moved into her New Jersey home in 2020, the year they were married.

“Nadine had financial concerns that she kept from Bob. She was often supported by others,” Weitzman said. “But she kept Bob sidelined from those conversations. And you’ll see that in black and white.”

“Where’s Bob? I’ll tell you where, he was doing his job, in the nation’s capital.”

Weitzman said that the gold bars found by the feds, which prosecutors say came from Daibes, were actually found in his wife’s locked closet, and Menendez didn’t know what she had in there.

“He knew that she had family gold,” Weitzman said.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Lara Pomerantz argued that the gold and cash were the price of Menendez selling out his country, as was a new Mercedes-Benz convertible for Nadine that Uribe paid for.

“He was powerful. He was also corrupt. For years, Robert Menendez betrayed the people he was supposed to serve by taking bribes,” she said. “This was not politics as usual. This was politics for profit … Robert Menendez was a United States senator on the take.”

Menendez, who was previously charged with corruption in a separate case that ended in a mistrial, was running a multi-pronged bribery scheme with his wife as a go-between, Pomerantz said.

The prosecutor described Hana as a failed businessman with connections to the Egyptian government. Hana, she said, bribed Menendez to leak nonpublic information about the U.S. embassy to Egyptian officials, to secretly ghost write a letter meant to respond to other senators’ concerns about human rights abuses, and to help approve the sale of almost $100 million of tank ammunition to Egypt.

Hana got a benefit of his own — a monopoly on the export of halal meat from the U.S. to Egypt, at the expense of other U.S. companies that used to do that business, the prosecutors said. And when a USDA official voiced concerns, Menendez tried to run interference and muscle that official into backing down, she said. The attempt didn’t shake the official’s attempts, but Egypt still gave Hana the monopoly, she said.

Menendez also tried to pressure the N.J. attorney general and the state’s U.S. attorney into dropping criminal cases against pals of Uribe and Daibes, the prosecutor said.

Menendez’s defense lawyer said all of his actions were just part of the normal duties of being a senator — taking interest in international matters and issues that impact his constituents. The senator had no power over the criminal cases, Weitzman said, and he was just asking about allegations that Latino businessmen were being targeted for selective prosecution.

“That’s not illegal. You may not like it. But it’s not illegal,” he said. “Listening to a friend is not a crime.”

The trial continues tomorrow with opening arguments from Hana and Daibes’ lawyers

NYC Council members press school officials on 3-K budget shortfall https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/05/15/nyc-council-members-press-school-officials-on-3-k-budget-shortfall/ Wed, 15 May 2024 22:47:17 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7699834 City Council members pressed Schools Chancellor David Banks on cuts to the city’s popular 3-K program at a Wednesday budget hearing, weeks after the schools head hinted at reversing big clawbacks that could deprive kids of seats.

Last month, Mayor Adams announced the city would pay $514 million to continue programs backed by expiring federal stimulus funds after the pandemic. The investment included $92 million for 3-K next school year — but it did not restore recent budget cuts to the program that Adams has blamed on the costs of sheltering migrants.

“I do want to come back to some of the statements you made when you were last before us,” said Councilman Lincoln Restler (D-Brooklyn), referencing a preliminary education budget hearing on March 18.

“You went on to say, ‘The parents in New York City are waiting to see if these cuts are going to be restored. I’m fighting to make that happen. And I believe that it is exactly what is going to happen in the coming weeks,'” he continued. “But of course, it didn’t happen. The mayor did not restore $170 million of cuts to early childhood education just that he made this year.”

Despite those cuts staying in the budget, education officials could not say how the reduction would impact the number of available seats.

“The last time you were here, you said we would restore it,” said Councilwoman Rita Joseph (D-Brooklyn), head of the Education Committee. “What’s the plan for that?”

Councilwoman Rita Joseph (Emil Cohen/NYC Council Media Unit)

Since former Mayor Bill de Blasio planned to expand 3-K, the Adams administration has attributed subsequent cuts to a series of problems as the program was stood up with temporary COVID aid. While 23,000 early childhood seats are currently empty, families are being shut out of programs elsewhere in the city.

With 3-K offers set to be released Thursday, 16% of families were not matched with any program ranked on their applications, according to preliminary data shared at the hearing. About 78% of families will receive an offer to one of their top three choices.

“I can’t over emphasize enough the state — the challenged state — that we assumed when we came into office as relates to early childhood,” Banks said. “We have made very, very significant progress, given what we inherited when we got here.”

Education officials have moved thousands of program seats across the city and adapted them to meet the scheduling and age-specific needs of more families. The city also tapped consultants at Accenture to produce a report, due last month, that could suggest more improvements to the program. It’s yet to be released.

“For working families, access to early childhood education is a deciding factor of whether they can remain in New York City or must leave to raise their children elsewhere,” said Council Speaker Adrienne Adams (D-Queens).

Despite the city’s hefty down payment last month, another $200 million fiscal cliff remains after COVID aid expires this summer. Programs on the chopping block or at risk of being trimmed back include hundreds of school nurses hired during the pandemic, alternatives to disciplinary action and suspensions and services for preschool age children with disabilities.

“The Council has been steady on this that our biggest challenge is not the costs related to the migrant influx but to grappling with the expiration of temporary dollars that were used to prop up permanent programs,” said Councilman Justin Brannan (D-Brooklyn), head of the Finance Committee.

Those budget woes were only worsened by less-than-expected school aid from the state, after lawmakers punted a funding formula overhaul until next year but tweaked how inflation is calculated. The result was a state aid increase that was nonetheless $126 million below what city education officials anticipated.

“It is very challenging as chancellor to have a list given to you of all these wonderful and amazing programs and to be told, which ones do you prioritize?” said Banks. “How do you prioritize arts over community schools? I mean, it’s like asking you which one is your favorite child? These are all wonderfully amazing programs. We don’t want to lose any of them.”

A final city budget is due by July 1.

Rep. Jamaal Bowman trashes pro-Israel PAC for $1.8M ad buy against him in Democratic primary https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/05/15/rep-jamaal-bowman-trashes-pro-israel-pac-for-1-8m-ad-buy-against-him-in-democratic-primary/ Wed, 15 May 2024 22:38:37 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7699885 Rep. Jamaal Bowman lashed out Wednesday against a pro-Israel political action committee that has launched a $1.8 million ad campaign against him in his contentious Democratic congressional primary.

Bowman (D-Westchester, Bronx) accused the United Democracy Project, which is tied to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), of spending lavishly to unseat him and silence his harsh criticism of Israel’s war in Gaza.

“New Yorkers know that if George Latimer is willing to sell out to Donald Trump’s biggest donors, he will sell you out, too,” Bowman said.

Bowman is locked in what is thought to be a tight battle with Westchester County Executive Latimer in June 25’s 16th Congressional District Democratic primary. Latimer is trumpeting his strong support for Israel.

Bowman says the AIPAC-affiliated group is bankrolled by conservative megadonors who usually back pro-Trump Republicans.

“Voters — not GOP billionaires — should be the ones who decide Democratic primaries,” said Jasmine Gripper of the Working Families Party, which is backing Bowman.

“Now he’s complaining … it’s not fair,” said a spokesman for Latimer’s campaign. “He needs to grow up.”

The two candidates traded barbs over Israel during their first debate Monday night.

Bowman accused Latimer of being “bought and paid for” by pro-Israel donors, while Latimer said the former Bronx middle school principal should focus more on legislating and less on grabbing media attention.

The 16th Congressional District covers most of the southern half of Westchester, including the majority minority cities of Mount Vernon, Yonkers and New Rochelle, along with some of the nation’s most affluent suburbs. It also includes slivers of the Bronx.

The district is strongly Democratic, and the winner of the primary will be an overwhelming favorite to win in November.

Political pundits say the pro-Israel group’s spending is likely just the start of a $10 million spending spree aimed at toppling Bowman, who is one of their top targets among the so-called squad of pro-Palestinian progressive lawmakers.

“It’s likely the tip of the iceberg,” said Jacob Rubashkin, an analyst with Inside Elections. “[AIPAC] thinks they can boost Latimer’s chances by spending a bunch of money.”

Although the AIPAC-affiliated group is funded by pro-Israel donors, its ads typically focus on other issues of more general interest to voters.

In the 16th Congressional District, Rubashkin predicted, the ads may echo Latimer’s attacks on Bowman for voting against President Biden’s bipartisan infrastructure plan or emphasize an embarrassing episode in which Bowman pulled a fire alarm during a congressional vote.

The congressional ad wars are unfolding as Israel continues to be a key issue on Capitol Hill.

The Republican-led House of Representatives is pushing a measure that would pressure Biden to end a pause on delivering huge bombs to Israel that have been dropped on Palestinian civilian targets in Gaza.

Meanwhile, the White House announced a new $1 billion arms sale to the Jewish state, a move that Bowman called “disappointing.”

Bowman says the U.S. should be pushing much harder to get Israel to end the war in Gaza, negotiate an end to its 57-year occupation of Palestinian lands and establish an independent Palestinian state alongside Israel.

13-year-old girl charged with 2 felonies for making terroristic threats against Rochester school https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/05/15/teen-girl-arrested-terroristic-threats-rochester-middle-school/ Wed, 15 May 2024 22:23:47 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7700330 A 13-year-old girl was arrested Wednesday after allegedly making a terrorist threat against her school in Rochester.

The Town of Greece Police Department said in a statement that the threat was made on Snapchat against Arcadia Middle School. The message was reported by Greece Central School District security just after 6 a.m.

“We worked with security to mitigate the danger and disruption to students, staff, and parents,” the police department said.

The author of the Snapchat post was identified as a 13-year-old female student at the school who was later charged with making a terroristic threat and falsely reporting an incident in the first degree — both Class D felonies.

The specifics of the threat were not made public. The girl’s identity was not released.

“The student was issued an expedited appearance ticket returnable to Monroe County Probation. We appreciate the quick response and work done cooperatively between the school district and our officers,” the police department said.

The incident comes less than two weeks after a transphobic and homophobic bomb threat was made at Arcadia High School, leading to an evacuation. The threat referenced a fight that had occurred in the girls’ restroom earlier in February, but the school did not offer additional details.
