Over the past two months, the bandits used the popular online bazaar to advertise they were selling a car, investigators said.  On six occasions, they arranged to meet up with someone looking to purchase their vehicle but instead robbed the buyer of the cash earmarked for the auto.

Over the last two months, the thieves used the popular online bazaar that connects buyers and sellers to advertise that they were selling a car, investigators said.  On six occasions, they had arranged to meet up with someone who wanted to buy their vehicle, but instead robbed them of the cash they were going to use to purchase the auto. The crew have stolen about $27,000 cash during the heists as well as two cars belonging to their victims, cops said.

The crooks are also wanted for swiping a 26-year-old woman’s car they found unoccupied and running off the Cross Bronx Expressway near Olmstead Ave. in Parkchester on Dec. 29.

They started their Facebook Marketplace spree on March 10 when they showed up at Dark St. and Dyre Ave. to meet a 36-year-old man who wanted to buy the car they had advertised. But once he arrived they brandished the menacing-looking club with nails protruding and robbed him of $3,000.

Two days later, they met up with another potential buyer, this time at Yates and Waring Aves., near the Bronx’s Pelham Parkway neighborhood, and put the 21-year-old man in a chokehold as they stole his cash and cell phone, cops said.

On April 8, the crew struck again, this time at Wilder Ave. and E. 233rd St., about a block from Seton Falls Park. During the afternoon robbery, three of the crooks confronted two men, ages 23 and 55, with a gun and metal bat. They struck the younger man in the head with the bat and fled with $10,000 cash the victims hoped to buy the vehicle with as well as the Honda the two men arrived in, cops said. The struck victim was treated by medics at the scene.

During that robbery, the crooks’ vehicle sported a license plate stolen from a car outside Calvary Hospital earlier that day, cops said.

On April 18 when the crew arranged to sell a car to two men, ages 24 and 29, on Rombouts Ave. near Dark St., about a block from their first Marketplace robbery, cops said. During the “sale” two crooks pulled a gun on the older victim and robbed him of $4,000.

As the month drew to a close, the crew briefly moved their operation to Queens, where they robbed a 55-year-old man on 65th Ave. near 160th St., about a block from the Long Island Expressway. During the April 25 heist, the crooks were posing as car buyers not sellers when they pulled a gun and robbed the victim of his vehicle, cops said.

Four days later, they were back on Rombouts Ave. in the Bronx, robbing a 22-year-old car buyer of $10,000. During the 11 a.m. robbery, the bandits pulled a gun and demanded his cash and cell phone, cops said. The crooks ran off up Rombouts Ave. toward Mount Vernon, across the county line in Westchester, cops said.

The crew’s last known heist occurred May 7 when they lured a 28-year-old man back to Dyre Ave. after advertising a vehicle on Facebook Marketplace. They pulled a knife and robbed the victim of his belongings and again were last seen heading toward Mount Vernon — this time in a gray Mercedes-Benz.

Detectives tied the string of robberies together after recovering surveillance footage of multiple incidents showing the same perpetrators, a police source said.

Facebook created Marketplace in 2016. By 2021, the wildly popular meet-up spot for buyers and sellers was getting more than a billion visitors a month, according to the website bigcommerce.com.

Cops on Tuesday released surveillance images of the suspects and asked the public’s help identifying them and tracking them down. Cops also released screenshots of some of the Facebook profiles they used to lure victims.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS. All calls will be kept confidential.

Bronx livery cab passenger refusing to pay $17 fare opens fire on driver https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/05/14/bronx-livery-cab-passenger-refusing-to-pay-17-fare-opens-fire-on-driver/ Wed, 15 May 2024 00:18:21 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7686272 A Bronx livery cab passenger refusing to pay a $17 fare jumped out of the moving vehicle and fired off five shots at the driver in a harrowing caught-on-video attack.

“I’m still afraid, so I’m home,” driver Eufelix Jiminian, 26, said of the harrowing clash with his passenger. “I’m not going out.”

Jiminian, 26, spoke out at a Tuesday press conference after driving up in his bullet-riddled white Toyota Highlander, which still has a slug lodged in the rear-passenger tail light.

“When the bullet hit the side of the car, he said it felt like an explosion. It felt like if he had hit the tire and the tire had blown up,” Fernando Mateo, a spokesman for the New York State Federation of Taxi Drivers, said at the press conference as he translated for Jiminian, who speaks Spanish. “It was a very scary moment because it was metal lead hitting metal. And just the sound alone was scary.”

The cabbie was just about to drop his fare off on Bronx Blvd. and Carpenter Ave. in Williamsbridge at 4 a.m. on May 1 when the passenger claimed they were at the wrong location, video from Jiminian’s dash cam shows.

“This isn’t Uber, buddy,” the passenger said, refusing Jiminian’s request to look at the passenger’s phone to double check the requested dropoff address.

As Jiminian began to drive on to find the right spot the passenger opened the door and stepped out of the moving car without paying the fare, leaving the door open, the video shows.

As the cabbie tried to figure out what was happening, the passenger could be seen from the open passenger door pulling a gun and running after the car.

At least five shots were fired, hitting the rear of Jiminian’s auto as it sped away, cops said.

“(Jiminian) told the passenger, ‘No, I was told to drop you off here.’ Then the passenger said ‘No!'” Mateo said at the press conference. “That’s when he jumped out of the car, and he shot five times as he was rolling away.”

The federation is offering a $3,000 reward for information about the gunman’s whereabouts.

“He said he has flashbacks,” Mateo said of Jiminian’s experience. “He’s only been able to work maybe three hours a day. He relives it over and over in his mind.”

Jiminian is a native of the Dominican Republic. Driving fares is in his blood: both his mother and father have been cabbies, Mateo said.

The victim had driven cabs for six years, mostly working the night shifts. While he’s never been shot at before, he was somehow always prepared for the possibility, Mateo said.

“He’s happy it happened to him because if it would’ve happened to someone else maybe they wouldn’t have been prepared like he was prepared,” said Mateo. “He was strong at the moment.”

Yet that bravado dwindled when the police took him to where he picked up and dropped the gunman off.

“He was concerned that the guy would show up somehow and start shooting again,” Mateo said.

New York State Federation of Taxi Drivers President Antonio Cabrera said bringing back the NYPD checkpoint program for cab drivers, in which cabbies give permission in advance for cops to stop their vehicles and check their passengers for weapons, could have prevented this.

“We need to make sure riders are unarmed when boarding a cab,” Cabrera said. “Drivers are sitting ducks, and we need to protect them.”

Bronx dad of 2 killed in suspected drug-related shooting mourned https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/05/13/bronx-dad-of-2-killed-in-suspected-drug-related-shooting-mourned/ Mon, 13 May 2024 12:00:57 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7682652 Bronx native Jeffrey Lopez had everything to live for — a loving family, good friends and a 3-month-old newborn son he wanted to introduce to the world.

But on Wednesday, all those plans were brought to a violent end in a cloud of gun smoke.

“We’re all hurting,” Price, a longtime friend of 30-year-old Lopez, told the Daily News, noting that everyone near the corner of Beaumont Ave. near E. 187th St. in Belmont — a few blocks from the Bronx Zoo — were left stunned by the slaying there. “People that own stores, the pharmacy, everybody’s hurt about this.”

Lopez was killed in front of his two older brothers. The three were known to hang out at the corner, neighbors said.

“They never made any trouble. [He] and his brothers have been out here almost every day,” said Mario Krasniqi, the owner of Mario’s Pizza & Italian Homemade Cuisine, which is across the street from where the shooting took place. “I know them as good neighbors. They come to the store. They even help me with the vans. It’s shocking and surprising.”

Cops are continuing to search for a masked gunman who fired nine shots toward Lopez, fatally striking him in the head.

Police believe the shooting was narcotics related. Lopez, they claim, was a dealer.

The gunman escaped in a silver Honda following the 6 p.m. shooting.

After he was shot, Lopez stumbled halfway down the block before he collapsed on the street. A Yankees cap, cell phone, comb and disposable phone were found lying in a pool of blood in front of the takeout restaurant.

Medics rushed Lopez to St. Barnabas Hospital, but everyone knew “he was already gone,” Price said.

“Once the shots finished I walked over to see who was laying down. His brother was right here with him. He died right in front of two of his brothers. His older brothers.”

One of his siblings put Jeffrey’s Yankee cap back on his head to save other family members from seeing the vicious wound.

“He didn’t want nobody to see him like that, so he put the hat over his face,” Price remembered. “He said, ‘My brother’s gone.'”

Days later, a heart made out of rose petals was left at the scene where Lopez died along with a makeshift memorial filled with pictures and messages to the fallen father.

Longtime friends remembered Lopez as a lovable computer game nerd and father of two who enjoyed building computers and had a menagerie of pets, including a snake, lizard, tarantula and a dog named Venom.

Lopez’s older son is 8. His youngest is just 3 months.

“If he’s not with his animals he got his kids,” Price said. “The baby lived with him. His oldest son didn’t. But he takes him every weekend. He takes his son and his son’s brother, that’s not even his kid, every weekend. Just cause he don’t want [the other child] to feel left out.”

Lopez lived about three blocks from where he was killed, cops said.

“He didn’t bother nobody,” Price said. “He always had everybody laughing. He was very outspoken.”

Lopez had been arrested three times, once for selling drugs, police said. His most recent arrest was in 2020 when cops nabbed him for criminal mischief. He had also been arrested for misdemeanor assault.

NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said Friday the gunman had targeted Lopez. Surveillance video recovered from the scene recorded the gunman as he “walks down Beaumont, pulls a pistol from his waistband and fires nine times toward E. 187th St., where he hits our victim one time in the head,” Kenny said

“He arrives and flees in a silver Honda,” Kenny said about the gunman.

Cops are trying to see if the murder is linked to five other shootings in the area since April 21.

“All of this violence is happening [right there],” Kenny said. “We’re trying to see if any of it or all of it is connected.”

Cops have released images of the gunman in the hopes someone recognizes him. Anyone with information regarding his whereabouts is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS. All calls will be kept confidential.

Daniel Lachapel, 25, was shot in the head on Allerton Ave. near White Plains Road in Allerton at about 10:50 p.m. Saturday. He died at the scene.

Neighbors said they heard multiple shots ring out but not much commotion after.

“I heard eight shots,” said Kevin Hernandez, 30, who lives in the building and was a friend of the victim. “The guy is the calmest guy. He doesn’t mess with anybody. He’s always on his own.”

Cops have made no arrests in the slaying.

“People couldn’t even go outside ’cause [police] said it was a crime scene,” Hernandez said. “When they told me who it was, it just shocked me. I didn’t expect that guy to get killed.”

Neighbor Hector Martinez, 64, said he didn’t realize the shots happened so close to home until police arrived.

“Oh, man, 25 years old? Young guy. I’m sorry to hear that,” he said. “I’m new here. I came here from Miami. … I haven’t heard something bad happen here like that.”

Still Hernandez and others described the neighborhood as dangerous.

“Me, myself I got jumped a month ago,” Hernandez recounted. “This area is just bad. Same spot he got shot is the same spot I got jumped.”

Lachapel’s shooting marks the second homicide this year in the Bronx’s 49th Precinct, which saw five killings in all of 2023.

Bronx woman choked by belt, dragged on street by rapist recounts ‘shock’ of attack https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/05/10/bronx-woman-choked-by-belt-dragged-on-street-by-rapist-recounts-shock-of-attack/ Fri, 10 May 2024 23:03:57 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7681753 The victim in a terrifying caught-on-video strangulation and rape on a Bronx street recounted hair-raising details of the May 1 ambush, and said the fiend who attacked her was a stranger.

“What happened that night, I was walking and he saw me and he grabbed me by the neck with a belt. He pulled me,” the woman told the Daily News Friday. “And he dragged me.”

Chilling images released by police this week show the masked rapist following the woman on E. 152nd St. near Courtlandt Ave. in Melrose at about 3:00 a.m., then throwing a looped belt around the victim’s throat and pulling her to the ground before hauling her between two parked cars.

Police released surveillance images of a suspect in a Bronx rape.

The woman’s hands clutched at her neck, trying to free herself.

“He didn’t say anything. I didn’t see him coming up behind me. I didn’t notice him,” the woman said, sitting on a building ledge alongside a cart of her belongings, a cap partly hiding a purple bruise on her left eye.

She said she had been on her way to a friend’s house when she was attacked, and her mind went blank when she felt the belt go around her neck.

“I couldn’t hear, I couldn’t talk or say nothing. The shock.”

After the assault the woman took herself to Lincoln Hospital, where she was treated and released.

Police released additional photos of the suspect on Friday that showed his face after scouring the area for more surveillance footage. Cops recovered images of the man that show him without the white towel covering his face during the late-night attack.

The victim said she did not know the man who assaulted her.

“The cops showed me pictures. I didn’t recognize him.”

Other women in the area were aware of the attack, some having seen photos of it, and were shaken, they said Friday.

“It’s horrifying. It’s disgusting,” said one 57-year-old woman who did not share her name. “I saw it. I saw what he did. He lassoed her up like an animal. Like a horse, like on the rodeo,” she said, shaking her head.

Another said although she felt safe enough to walk in the area, she avoided doing so late at night.

“I thought it was disturbing. It was very disturbing. ‘Cause who would do something like that? He’s got a mother, too. He’s got grandmothers,” said Sharon Hendison, 60, who lives in a nearby women’s shelter.

A woman who gave her name as Carmen, 57, said the attacker was “unafraid.”

“We have to be careful, you don’t know who is behind you.”

The attacker was seen creeping up behind the 45-year-old victim as she walked on a sidewalk near the corner of E. 152nd St. and Third Ave. in the South Bronx around 3 a.m. last Wednesday, police said.

Terrifying video shows the man, whose face was concealed with a white towel, using his belt as a lasso around the victim’s neck and pulling her to the ground.

The attacker dragged the woman several feet down the sidewalk as she brought her hands to her neck and struggled to remove the belt, video seen by the Daily News shows.

As the man pulled her by the neck between two parked cars, she lost consciousness.

The sicko periodically peeked over the cars as he bent down several times. He then got on top of the woman and raped her.

The man took off after the attack and is still being sought by police. The NYPD’s Special Victims Unit is investigating the disturbing incident.

Numerous shots rang out on Beaumont Ave. near E. 187th St. in Belmont just after 6:30 p.m., witnesses told the Daily News.

The 30-year-old victim, suffering from a gunshot wound to the head, stumbled halfway down the block and collapsed.

“When I got here, he was faceup in front of the Chinese food store bleeding,” a witness who asked not to be named told The News. “He was dead.”

Medics rushed him to St. Barnabas Hospital, but he could not be saved. About a dozen of the man’s family members gathered at the hospital hours after the shooting.

“We just want people to know he was very loved,” said a relative.

Later Wednesday night, a Yankees cap, cell phone, comb and a disposable phone lay in a pool of blood in front of the takeout restaurant.

“This is the Bronx,” the witness said. “This happens here.”

The victim’s name was not immediately released.

There were no arrests.

Day care worker arrested for shoving boy, 2, headfirst into table at Bronx pre-school https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/05/07/day-care-worker-arrested-for-shoving-boy-2-headfirst-into-table-at-bronx-pre-school/ Tue, 07 May 2024 13:18:19 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7673549 A day care worker was arrested for shoving a 2-year-boy multiple times head first into a table at a Bronx pre-school, police said.

Savitree Nerine, 49, was charged Monday with endangering the welfare of a child and harassment, police said.

Nevine, an assistant at the day care at Little Stars Preschool on Edson Ave. near Edenwald Ave., got angry at the boy Monday morning and allegedly shoved him into a table multiple times, according to cops. The city’s Department of Education contracts with the community-based program to provide early childhood services.

Someone later in the morning reported the assault to cops and when officers reviewed school camera footage they saw the assault, officials said.

“This alleged behavior is extremely concerning, and we do not condone this at any schools or contracted early childhood programs,” public schools spokeswoman Nicole Brownstein said in a statement. “We are in communication with the contracted early childhood program on any necessary next steps.”

Cops nab Bronx motorist one year after fatal hit-and-run claimed life of hard working immigrant https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/05/04/cops-nab-bronx-motorist-one-year-after-fatal-hit-and-run-claimed-life-of-hard-working-immigrant/ Sat, 04 May 2024 15:08:54 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7669160 A Bronx motorist will finally face justice a year after leaving 64-year-old e-bicyclist Hua Pan to die on the street as his family — who happened upon the scene – looked on in horror, cops said.

Police cuffed Emilio Berrios, 32, Friday on charges of criminally negligent homicide, reckless endangerment and leaving the scene of an incident for the fatal hit-and-run that claimed Pan’s life on April 5, 2023, according to law enforcement.

Berrios was released from Rikers Island on Saturday after posting bail. A Bronx criminal court judge set bail at $25,000 cash or $75,000 insurance bond at his Friday arraignment, records show.

Berrios was driving behind the wheel of a white pickup truck when he blew through a red light heading north along Williamsbridge Road at Pierce Ave. in Morris Park around 11:22 p.m., cops said.

Pan, a hard working immigrant who his family said had been looking forward to retiring, had been traveling east along Pierce Ave. when he passed through a green light and Berrios’ truck slammed into him, an investigation by the NYPD’s Collision Investigation Squad found.

Police found Pan’s unconscious body on the pavement with a head wound less than 200 feet away from his Pierce Ave. home, cops said.

As Pan lay dying in the street, his daughter and son-in-law happened upon the scene while driving home.

“We passed by and saw he’s Chinese. Then we see the clothes are the same; jacket, same thing,” son-in-law Ken Ruo, 42, told the Daily News last year.

The couple’s 12-year-old son, who was home at the time of the crash, witnessed the crash’s horrific aftermath.

“My boy saw it. He couldn’t sleep the whole night,” Ruo said.

Medics rushed the victim to Jacobi Medical Center where he died, according to law enforcement.

Berrios fled the scene in his truck, according to police. He never reported the fatal crash.

Pan hailed from China’s Fujian province and immigrated to the U.S. about 30 years ago, according to his son-in-law.

He made his living as a chef and had looked forward to retiring at 65, Ruo said.

“He’s a really nice guy,” said Ruo. “Every day off, he’s bringing the kids to the park. Very nice grandfather.”

Berrios is set to return to court Wednesday, records show.
